For the 2007 calender year, 1,030,000 tons of reclycable paper was collected resulting in:
1. A CLEANER ENVIRONMENT
Recycling materials reduces the need to dig up or mine new raw materials, which often damages the surrounding environment. For every ton of paper recycled, there is a reduction of coal based emissions of 1 ton of CO2 and There is a reduction of electricity based emissions of 1.8 tons of CO2. 2. JOB CREATION 12 600 People are directly & indirectly employed in the paper recycling activity 3. REDUCED COSTS TO LOCAL AUTHORITIES As long as there are Reclyclers, turning throw-away paper into money, the burden on local authoroties will be reduced with a corresponding reduction in cost to remove reclyclable material to waste fill areas (which has become a scarce resource). See 5. below. 4. DECREASED NECESSITY TO IMPORT RAW MATERIALS Raw mateial for the manyfacture of paper is mostly imported. any reclycling reduces the neef for expensive imports. 5. FREE UP SPACE AT LANDFILL SITES Only non reclycable material should be transported to waste-fill areas. Land for waste fill is scarce & expensive & the cost of transport to these areas is becoming prohibitive. If all household paper/cardboard was recycled ¾ million m3 of landfill space would be saved per annum (Local Authorities would in the process save substantially in costs per annum from reduced collection and landfill costs). For Every Ton Of Paper Recycled 3 m2 of landfill space is saved; This reduces costs to municipalities in that their transport costs are reduced and it frees up space at landfill sites. (Visualise 1,030,000 tons of paper at a landfill site). 6. SAVE ENERGY Making new goods out of recycled material saves energy. For example, making new aluminium cans from recycled cans uses 20 times less energy than making cans from the raw material. Saves Clean Air and Water - In most cases, making products from recycled materials creates less air pollution and water pollution than making products from raw materials. 40% Less energy is required to manufacture paper from recovered paper. Recycled fibre reduces air emissions in papermaking by 70%. ! A substantial amount of energy is saved - energy saved from paper recycling per annum is sufficient to provide electricity to 512 homes for a year). 7. SAVE RESOURCES Most of what we throw away is made from products that are slowly running out or cannot be replaced quickly enough because of the amount we consume. Many of the materials we throw in landfill tips have a value and can be used again. Make compost from kitchen and garden waste to use as a soil improver. Composting green waste saves valuable landfill space which is running out. |

One recycled tin can would save enough energy to power a television for 3 hours. 1 recycled glass bottle would save enough energy to power a computer for 25 minutes. One recycled plastic bottle would save enough energy to power a 60-watt light bulb for 3 hours. 70% less energy is required to recycle paper compared with making it from raw materials.
8. MORE FACTS
1. Up to 60% of the rubbish that ends up in the dustbin could be recycled.
2.The unreleased energy contained in the average dustbin each year could power a television for 5,000 hours.
3. Recycled paper produces 73% less air pollution than if it was made from raw materials. The average person gets through 38kg of
newspapers per year. It takes 24 trees to make 1 ton of newspaper.
4.On average, 16% of the money you spend on a product pays for the packaging, which ultimately ends up as rubbish.
5. As much as 50% of waste in the average dustbin could be composted.
6. Up to 80% of a vehicle can be recycled.
7. 9 out of 10 people would recycle more if it were made easier.
